Covering an area of 259 sq. kms, it is considered to be one of the Wonders of the Natural World. Serengeti is one of the largest in Tanzania (14763 km²). The name Serengeti is derived from the name Masai ‘Siringet’, meaning endless plains. It is in this part that the great migration, unique phenomenon in the world, spends part of the year, in search of freshly grown grass, rich in calcium. The migration of some 2 million animals is observable from December to mid-June, and in February the calving takes place. It is in Serengeti that you can observe the largest number of herbivores and predators. Nearly 500 species of birds have been recorded, some of them migratory, from Europe and Asia October to April.
