Compulsory Visa. It is very easy to establish one when entering Tanzania (international airports, border crossings – Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar and Kigoma). Consider preparing $ 50 (or the equivalent in euros).
Obtaining a visa: You will be asked for a valid passport (not expired before 6 months), 1 photo ID, a travel certificate (an agency fax) or a photocopy of the ticket. You must fill out a form on site and pay 50 € in cash (no checks) or 70 € for a double entry visa. Letter money is accepted. The lead time is 5 business days. By correspondence, count at best 7 days. Send a stamped envelope at the recommended rate for returning the passport.
In Switzerland, there are 70 Fs (single entry) and 140 Fs (multiple entry). Count 5 days.
In Canada, the entry visa, valid for 3 months, costs C $ 80 (double entry, valid for 6 months: C $ 120).
To help you with your formalities, here are two agencies specialized in the service of obtaining visa: Action-Visas.com and Visas Express.
The vaccine against yellow fever is obligatory since the beginning of 2008. It is necessary to provide a margin of more than 10 days before your departure. Do not forget to bring the international vaccination certificate, which you will be asked by customs officers to enter Tanzania and Zanzibar. (It seems that systematic control is a peculiarity of Zanzibar).
Vaccines not mandatory but recommended: against typhoid, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, DTP (diphtheria-tetanus-polio). In some cases (see your doctor), vaccinations against meningitis A + C, against rabies.
